If you are damn sure that you do need to weigh the ingredients in food with precision – then jump to the list of kitchen scales.

If you are confused, then read on.

To be frank – you may not even need a food weighing machine for your kitchen!

Why? Because most of us do not need super perfection while cooking food.

Has anyone ever told you to put 2 grams of salt, 45 grams of sugar, 60 grams of cinnamon, etc…? No one right?

We use measurements like – a pinch of salt, a cup of water, a tablespoon of oil, little bit of sugar, etc..

Then who needs a weighing machine for the kitchen?

These are the only 4 benefits of investing in a kitchen weighing machine –

1. Minimizes wastage of food – people who have just begun cooking food tend to waste a lot of food because they cannot estimate the quantity of each ingredient they are using. With a kitchen scale, beginners can easily measure and then add ingredients to the cooking bowl. This will save food and money.

2. Achieve consistency of taste – Ever wondered how does Mc Donald’s or KFC food taste almost the same every time? Same with those packs of pre-cooked, ready to eat food items – they taste the same consistently. That is because their recipes are precise with every ingredient measured in grams or ounces. With the same quantity of spices and other ingredients, taste remains consistent throughout.

3. Specific dishes taste great when prepared precisely – Example – Coffee, sauces, cakes.

4. Helps to stay healthy – I have an excellent habit of finishing everything that’s on my food plate. More the food on my plate, fatter I become day by day! But if you’re trying to get a handle on your serving sizes, a digital kitchen scale can help. You can measure dry pasta, pieces of meat, cheese, and more — which will, in turn, will help you manage portion sizes. With portion sizes in control, you prevent overeating and gaining excess weight.

The problems in using a kitchen weighing scale and how can you overcome them?

Most of the cookbooks, cooking shows & videos do not give you the measurement in grams or ounces.

Then how to be precise and avoid wastage of ingredients?

Heres what I do —

  1. I read/ watch exciting recipes
  2. Then I gather all the ingredients to prepare the dish
  3. Since measurements are “put 1 cup of flour, 4 tablespoons of sugar, etc..” I take the same amount in a light paper cups
  4. Then, I measure every ingredient that I am putting while preparing the dish and note down the exact weight in grams
  5. If the dish turns out to be tasty – I have a recipe with a list of ingredients in grams! Yeah, and the dish tastes almost the same every time I cook it. Why? – Because ingredient measurement is the same every time!

I know the fact that –

Ingredients are not the only thing that decides the taste. Cooking is an art, the process of cooking and skills matter too.

But, consistently using the same amount of spices, sugar, flour, etc… can help you master the art faster!

The kitchen weigh scale buying guide

Thankfully, due to the fast progress of technology…

Almost all of the kitchen weighing scales available in the market today are electronic.

Kitchen Weighing Scales – Analog vs Digital

What it means is that the weight measurements are more accurate due to electronic systems and they are easy to read because modern weighing scales come with digital displays (just like calculators).

What to look for while buying a kitchen weighing scale?

1. Maximum capacity: This is the maximum weight limit that the kitchen scale can measure. Around 5kgs should be way more than enough for a kitchen at home even when you are preparing food for lots of guests.

2. Minimum weight: It matters a lot. Minimum weight is the smallest amount of weight that the machine can detect and measure. Imagine you put half a cup of flour, and the device reads “0g” ZERO! An ideal kitchen scale should be able to measure even 1 gram food items.

3. Accuracy: A good kitchen scale should be accurate to 1 gram increments. Readings should be consistent and dependable.

4. Tare function: Tare option is beneficial to weigh different ingredients in the same container.

Tare function adds to the convenience of not removing one ingredient from the bowl to measure the second ingredient that you are about to add.

How does tare function work?

E.g. You are preparing a healthy smoothie and need to mix 200ml milk, 50 grams strawberries, 20 grams sliced banana and 15 grams oats. Will it be convenient to measure each ingredient separately on a kitchen scale and then mix them in a separate bowl? Heck NO!

That’s when tare helps – You put just 1 bowl on the scale, reset the weight to zero and then add milk till it shows the 200ml reading. Then you press the TARE button, and the scale will reset back to zero. Then you add strawberries till reading shows 50 grams. Press TARE again – now add sliced banana till reading is 20 grams – and again you press TARE to make reading zero. At last, you add oats until the reading is 15 grams.

That’s it.

You have all the ingredients with precise measurements in 1 bowl – thanks to the tare function.

5. Power source: Few scales are battery operated while others work on electricity. I prefer battery operated kitchen scales as our town faces lots of power cuts and I can continue with cooking even without electricity supply.

6. Size of LCD screen: All of the electronic kitchen weighing scales come with digital LCDs. If you are buying this for your granny, then I would prefer a scale with large LCD for ease of reading.

7. Splash resistance: The kitchen scale is bound to get splashes of liquid no matter how careful you are. Ensure the kitchen scale you are buying can resist splashes so that the machine doesn’t get spoiled by liquids.

8. Other functions: Can it measure liquids like water and milk? Water & milk are very common food ingredients, and an ideal kitchen weighing scale should be able to measure these liquids.

Does it have a unit converter? If you are reading or watching an American recipe, then weights will be in ounces – not grams. Look for a unit conversion button that shows weights in ounces as well as grams with just 1 press.

9. Warranty: Does this need an explanation? The warranty gives us peace of mind that in case something goes wrong with the kitchen scale then it will be taken care of by the manufacturer. Look for at least 6 months warranty if you are buying a scale worth more than ₹700. Machines cheaper than ₹700 may not provide any warranty because of the cheap cost.

Goodness, gracious! 9 factors to consider while selecting the best kitchen weighing scale!

Worry not…

This was the sole intention of this article – to simplify the choices.

Or you can say – spoon feed the best 7 choices to you.

Here we go.

Official unboxing video from YouTube: ZAAP EatSmart kitchen Scale UnBoxing & Review

My thoughts – This is number 1 on my list for multiple reasons. ZAAP EatSmart Kitchen Weighing Scale ticks off all the essential features required in a food weight scale. It is precise, waterproof, portable, has a large display and comes with 1 year of warranty. I can’t stress how worry free it is to have a waterproof machine in the kitchen. You just don’t have to worry about spoiling the machine by spilling too much water.

On top of that, you can even wash this kitchen scale under tap water! How convenient is that!

The only thing bad about this – ZAAP EatSmart Kitchen Weighing Scale is the cost. If you are going to use the kitchen scale regularly then its worth the investment. If it is just a temporary craze that you’ve got then go for a cheaper option.

2. Generic Electronic Kitchen Digital Weighing Scale (SF 400)

Generic Electronic Kitchen Digital Weighing Scale

Maximum capacity: 10 kilograms

Minimum weight: 2 grams

Accuracy: 1 gram. SF 400 uses a Strain Gauge Sensor System for high accuracy weight readings.

Tare function: Yes

Power source: 2 AA batteries (included)

Display: Medium sized LCD with backlight to read at night time

Splash resistance: Yes, the machine is resistant to a few splashes. The tray on the scale can be detached and washed separately.

Other functions: Unit converter, Liquid measurement

Warranty: None. But very cheap.

My thoughts – What should I say about this machine? It is the most popular kitchen weighing machine on the internet!

It is reliable, precise and very cheap! I strongly recommend this machine for beginners who are not sure for how long they will continue with the good habit of weighing food ingredients for health and cost saving reasons. It is dirt cheap, and you hardly lose anything even if you stop using it.

On the bad side of things – it is not entirely waterproof like the #1 machine in our list. Also, there is absolutely no warranty on it. Don’t worry, Amazon still gives 10 days replacement if you receive a faulty machine.

On the better side, it can handle occasional splashes of liquid. And no warranty is supported by an extremely cheap price.

There are multiple rebranded versions available for SF 400 kitchen weigh scale. I’ve linked to the cheapest version available in the link below:

3. Health Sense Chef-Mate Digital Kitchen Scale (KS33)

Official product video: HealthSense Chef-Mate KS 33 Digital Kitchen Scale

My thoughts – Health Sense Chef-Mate Digital Kitchen Scale (KS33) is another beautiful and sturdy kitchen scale which comes with a 1-year warranty.

It comes with a food-grade plastic bowl which is quite handy to measure ingredients in larger quantities.

It is not entirely waterproof like the ZAAP model but can handle splashes. Also, it is incredibly compact. Few people dislike it being super compact but I don’t find a problem with that.

If ZAAP EatSmart is costly for you and you don’t want to buy SF 400 because it is without warranty, then KS33 kitchen scale will be the next best choice.

4. Dr Trust Electronic Kitchen Digital Scale (IGH00104)

Dr Trust Electronic Kitchen Digital Scale

Maximum capacity: 5 kilograms

Minimum weight: 1 gram

Accuracy: 1 gram. Patented Accu Gauge Technology for measuring weight.

Tare function: Yes

Power source: 2 AAA batteries (included)

Display: Large with numbers in white light and black background make them extremely easy to read even in the dark (when the electricity goes off for load shedding, outage, etc…)

Splash resistance: Yes, it can handle occasional liquid spills. The plastic bowl can be washed separately.

Other functions: Unit converter, Liquid measurement, Food grade plastic bowl and a thermometer included in the package, auto off after 2 minutes

Warranty: 2 years

My thoughts – Dr Trust claims this digital kitchen scale uses their own patented weight sensors which are extremely accurate. I cannot verify whether it is true or not because I do not use this machine. That’s when I took help of Mr Google. Yes, people have said it is accurate but not super duper atomic level accurate. Anyways, we do not require the nuclear level of accuracy in the kitchen.

This machine is shaped conveniently and comes with a bowl which fits in perfectly. There is very less chance of accidental slipping of the bowl because of its secure design.

It comes with a thermometer, which is a great bonus.

What I liked the most is a 2 years warranty! It seems Dr Trust are very confident about the quality of their kitchen scale and hence are providing very long warranty period.

Go for it if you like the secure design and 2 years warranty that they provide.

5. Zelenor Electronic Kitchen Digital Weighing Scale (SF-400A)

Electronic Kitchen Digital Weighing Scale (SF-400A)

Maximum capacity: 10 kilograms

Minimum weight: 1 gram

Accuracy: 1 gram. Uses 4 high precision weight sensors to measure weight with better accuracy.

Tare function: Yes

Power source: 2 AAA batteries (included)

Display: Large display with green backlight.

Splash resistance: Yes, it can resist splashes. The provided tray is washable.

Other functions: Unit converter, Liquid measurement, Auto power off in 1 minute.

Warranty: None

My thoughts – SF-400A is the second most rebranded kitchen weigh scale after SF-400.

You can say it is the elder brother of SF400. Functions are the same but it looks different.

SF-400A is little larger in size and may be easier to keep larger dishes on it.

On the bad side of things – it is not entirely waterproof like the #1 machine in our list. Also, there is absolutely no warranty on it. Don’t worry; Amazon still gives 10 days replacement if you receive a faulty machine.

There are multiple rebranded versions available for SF 400A kitchen weigh scale. I’ve linked to the cheapest version available in the link below:

6. HealthSense Chef-Mate Digital Kitchen Scale (KS 50)

HealthSense Chef-Mate Digital Kitchen Scale (KS 50)

Display: Large clear lit LCD illuminated by a purple backlight and white font for easy reading.

Splash resistance: Yes, It will resist occasional liquid spills.

Other functions: Unit converter, Liquid measurement, Auto power off after 2 minutes.

Warranty: 1 year

My thoughts – The body of KS 50 is brushed stainless steel which naturally resists fingerprints and looks cool too.

Stainless steel body makes this HealthSense scale sturdy, drop resistant and durable. It will easily survive occasional drops without breaking the machine.

And that’s the only selling point.

7. Metro Electronic Kitchen Scale With Bowl (B09)

Metro Electronic Kitchen Scale With Bowl (B09)

Maximum capacity: 7 kilograms

Minimum weight: 10 grams

Accuracy: 1 gram. Uses 4 high precision weight sensors to measure weight with better accuracy.

Tare function: Yes

Power source: 2 AAA batteries (included)

Splash resistance: Yes, it can resist a few splashes of liquid. Bowl can be detached and washed separately.

Other functions: Unit converter,  No Liquid measurement, auto off after 60 seconds, bowl included

Warranty: None

My thoughts – It feels plasticky, like a cheap plastic water bucket. That’s the reason Metro Electronic Kitchen Scale With Bowl comes towards the end.

Don’t get me wrong; It can still measure weight. It’s just the build quality that pulls it down the list.

8. SilverCrest Stylish Electronic Digital Kitchen Weighing Scale (SC-BL)

SilverCrest Stylish Electronic Digital Kitchen Weighing Scale

Maximum capacity: 5.75 kilograms

Minimum weight: 1 gram

Accuracy: 1 gram. Uses 4 high precision weight sensors to measure weight with better accuracy.

Tare function: Yes

Power source: CR 2032 (button cell – included)

Display: Large with high contrast numbers which are easy to read

Splash resistance: Yes, it can resist occasional splashes of liquid but cannot be washed directly under running water.

Other functions: Unit converter, Liquid measurement (Aquatronic)

Warranty: 1 year

My thoughts – SilverCrest SC-BL looks stylish. This digital kitchen scale seems like a cheaper version of ZAAP EatSmart.

If you are more into making smoothies, juices or milkshakes then the Aquatronic function will help to get liquid measurements more precisely.

If you are planning to buy SilverCrest SC-BL scale, I would suggest you put a little bit more money and buy Health Sense Chef-Mate Digital Kitchen Scale-KS33.

Recommended digital weighing scales for a restaurant or a food caterer’s kitchen

Even when guests visit and we have to prepare a lot of food, I’ve never seen numbers more than 3 kgs on our kitchen scale.

When I am talking about guests visiting home and we preparing food for them, I am talking about maybe 6 or 7 guests. If a lot of guests coming, we pass on the pain to a local restaurant or a food caterer.

I agree…

If you own a restaurant or a food catering service, a 5kg weighing machine will not be enough.

At least 20kg weighing capacity is what you should look for as a professional food caterer or a restaurant operator.

Here are a few options for you –

1. Equal Digital Kitchen Weighing Scale (25kgs) With White Backlight Display (EQ25)

Equal Kitchen Scale (25kgs)

Maximum capacity: 25 kilograms

Minimum weight: 5 grams

Accuracy: 1 gram.

Tare function: Yes

Power source: 2 AA batteries (included) or Power Adaptor (included)

Display: Large sized screen with white backlight.

Splash resistance: Yes, it can resist a few splashes of liquid. Cannot be washed.

Other functions: Unit converter,  pieces counter

Warranty: 6 months

My thoughts – This machine seems to be a perfect choice for small to medium sized restaurant or a food caterer.

As a caterer or restaurant chef, you will need to measure ingredients more often compared to home kitchen chefs.

Considering that this kitchen scale will be in use more often, the built quality is very sturdy, and it can also work on electricity to save replacing batteries too often.

All in all, perfect size for small to medium food caterers and restaurants.

2. Equal Digital Kitchen Weighing Scale for Home, Shop and Kitchen (50 Kgs Capacity)

Maximum capacity: 50 kilograms

Equal Kitchen Scale (50kgs)

Minimum weight: 100 grams

Accuracy: 5 grams.

Tare function: Yes

Power source: Rechargeable batteries inbuilt (battery charging adaptor included)

Display: Large sized LED banner like display with white LEDs

Splash resistance: Yes, it can resist a few splashes of liquid.

Other functions: Unit converter, auto off after 60 seconds, bowl included

Warranty: 1 year

My thoughts – The Dept. of Legal Metrology approves this machine. Stamping & verification certificate comes along with the kitchen scale.

The total structure is made up of heavy Mild Steel (MS) with Basalt Grey powder coating to protect it from dust & other rough industrial environments.

Overall, a rough and tough kitchen scale for large scale cooking. Absolutely overkill and useless for home kitchens as the minimum measurement is 100gms and accuracy is 5gms.

Few troubleshooting tips for a kitchen weighing scale

Make it or break it

The kitchen weighing scale I purchased is not accurate/ reading keeps changing very often for the same item! How should I fix it?

  • Make sure the surface where you have placed the kitchen weighing scale is clean, flat and level. Uneven surfaces can result in inaccurate and fluctuating weight readings
  • Remove the batteries, wait for 30 seconds and put the batteries back – try weighing again
  • Recalibrate weighing scale with the calibration function (if your kitchen weighing scale has one)
  • If everything fails, get a warranty replacement (if the kitchen weighing scale has warranty)

I accidentally spilled water/ milk/ juice or any other liquid on my kitchen scale, what to do?

  • Don’t worry- most of the kitchen scales can handle splashes and spills of liquids. Wipe off the liquid and wait for the kitchen scale to dry for few hours. It will work fine.
  • If you accidentally dropped the kitchen scale in a kitchen sink or any vessel full of liquid then remove batteries immediately. Wipe off as much liquid as possible and wait for the scale to dry up. If you spill oil then you might need to open the screws and clean off the internals carefully with a dry cloth.

There is no display on the LCD, is my kitchen scale dead?

  • Try pressing the ON button a few times. If pressing ON button doesn’t work – then hold the ON button for 10 to 15 seconds and check if you get the display
  • Check batteries. It could be due to low battery. Try a set of new batteries – and remember – never mix old and new batteries.
  • If still no display, get a replacement if the scale is in warranty.

Buttons don’t respond/ button is stuck no matter how hard I press, what should I do?

  • Firstly, operate all the electronics gently. Don’t press the buttons too hard as there is a chance that you may break the button push mechanism inside.
  • Ensure the scale is powering on. Maybe the battery is dead and that’s why the buttons are not responding. Replace dead batteries if that’s the case.
  • Gently clean off any dirt if present from the sides of the button
  • If still, the buttons don’t respond – seek warranty replacement/ repair if the kitchen scale is in warranty

Lastly, if the scale is not in warranty and is useless, then become a geek and open the scale carefully. Clean it from inside using a dry cloth! Assemble the kitchen scale again and try to see if it works.
